What is a driver?A driver (or a device driver) is a small, system level program that allows a specific piece of hardware (for example, a HP StorageWorks DAT tape drive) to interface to a specific operating system (e.g. Microsoft Windows). HP DAT tape drives are available with either SCSI or USB interfaces, the SCSI or USB interface controllers or host bus adapters inside the computer will also require their own drivers. In some cases these are provided by the operating systems, if this is not the case then the device manufacturer will supply any required drivers. It is always best practice to use the supplied driver. The procedure for installing the driver program for the HBA is dependent on the operating system being used. HP DAT Tape DriversAll HP DAT drives (Parallel SCSI, USB and Autoloaders) require a tape driver.
HP DAT Autochanger DriversIn addition to the tape driver, HP DAT Autoloaders also require a driver to control the autochanger mechanism within the product.
HP DAT USB Mass Storage DriversIn addition to the tape driver, HP USB devices make use of the USB Mass Storage protocol to translate SCSI commands into USB packets. To do this an additional driver is required.
Novell NetWare 4.x, 5.x, 6.xThe NetWare 4.x native backup application is called SBACKUP and the NetWare 5.x / 6.x native backup application is called SBCON. The driver, nwtape.cdm, supports all HP DAT drives. Please note that SBACKUP (NetWare 4.x) does not support the HP DAT Autoloaders. InstallationMake sure the appropriate SCSI driver is loaded. If necessary, type MODULES on the command line to check if these drivers are loaded. Two drivers are needed: ASPITRAN (NetWare 4.x) / NWASPI (Netware 5.x/6.x) and an HBA driver. If those drivers are not loaded, make sure to load them first:
SBACKUP or SBCON can now be run. To load Sbackup, type the following:
To load SBCON type: LOAD SBCON Windows 95, 98 and METhe tape backup utility in the Windows 95 / 98 and ME operating system does not support DAT drives. HP drivers come as part of any third-party backup software that can be purchase or are supplied with HP products, such as TapeWare. This is why HP does not supply independent drivers. The software will detect and supply drivers for the HP tape products as part of its installation. InstallationDrivers are provided by the third-party backup applications sold specifically for the Windows 95 and 98 operating systems. Windows Server 2000 / 2003 and XP ProfessionalThere is a built-in utility within Windows called NTBACKUP. The drivers must be installed to enable NTBACKUP to operate. However, HP recommends that a third party backup application be used instead of NTBACKUP to ensure that advanced tape drive features are properly exploited and utilize full drive performance. The drivers for the HP tape products are included with Windows as they have the required 'signature.' The 4mmdat.sys driver included with Windows supports all HP DAT products up to DAT40. However, it is recommended that the HPDAT.sys is installed to replace the 4mmdat.sys driver for the DAT72 and all HP DAT products. Installation
Windows NT 3.51There is a built-in utility within Windows called NTBACKUP. Drivers must be installed to enable NTBACKUP to operate.HP however recommends that a third party backup application be used instead of NTBACKUP to ensure that advanced tape drive features are properly exploited and utilize full drive performance. InstallationThese instructions cover only Windows NT 3.51. If system has an earlier version of the Windows NT operating system, it is advised that it is upgraded to version 3.51 or later.
Windows NT 4.0There is a built-in utility within Windows called NTBACKUP. Drivers must be installed to enable NTBACKUP to operate.HP however recommends that a third party backup application be used instead of NTBACKUP to ensure that advanced tape drive features are properly exploited and utilize full drive performance. InstallationIn all cases, first remove the native Windows NT 4.0 driver or any other DAT driver before starting the installation of the HP Surestore DAT driver. The installation instructions are also valid when removing drivers, by selecting the Remove option instead of Add. These instructions cover only Windows NT 4.0. Service Pack 3 (SP3) or above.
